Ederney make late winning surge

The victorious Ederney Ladies team

Ederney 1-17

Tempo 4-6

Ederney put in a grandstand finishing surge to come from behind and claim the ladies junior championship crown in this pulsating decider with Tempo, the game played at the Derrygonnelly ground.

That the winners had to come from behind to win this contest was surprising for over the opening twenty minutes of the game they had been far and away the dominant side.

Leaving a limp Tempo side in the starting blocks, Ederney dictated the play as they enjoyed an almost complete monopoly of possession in the middle third of the park.

With midfielder Naoimhin Daly the orchestrator in chief, Ederney swept their way forward for a tide of points that hoisted them into a commanding lead on a scoreline of 0-9 to 0-1.

On the scoreboard for them had been Dearbhaile McMenamim, Michelle Corry and Arlene Ferris and with Tempo looking decidedly uneasy , the game appeared to be done and dusted.

But there was to be a remarkable turnaround over the next half hour so much so that it was rejuvenated Tempo who were to emerge as the stronger side, so much so that as the game headed into the finishing five to six minutes a Tempo victory looked to be on the cards.

Tempo over the ten minutes leading up to the break finally managed to get a grip on matters and a couple of points from Zoe Leonard and Sara McCausland ignited a revival.

That revival was further fuelled by a goal each from Shannon McQuaid and Sara McCausland and at the interval there was just a point separating the teams.

Over the early minutes of the second half the teams traded points before Tempo made another explosive burst with two more goals.

Sara McCausland again found the net with a strong shot and Sorcha Campbell had a distance effort sail into the top corner to launch the team well in front.

But in a game which was to provide terrific entertainment and a frantic finale, Tempo found themselves having to attempt to fend off a ferocious late charge from a resolute Ederney side.

The former leaders regained the spark they had shown over the first quarter and they ate into the Tempo lead with points from Shannon Cassidy and Michelle Corry.

Still it looked that a goal would be required to fully bridge the deficit and three minutes from time the goal arrived, Shannon Cassidy at corner forward cracking home a close range shot.

Ederney now firmly back in control and they added an insurance point close to the finish.

A deserved win for them, they had dictated long spells of the game but the tendency to concede goals had made it a very testing battle for them.

For Tempo goalkeeper Cleona Bogue pulled off two outstanding stops and half forward Sorcha Campbell picked up player of the match award. Back in their defence full back Caitlin McCann turned in a fine performance.

For Ederney the aforementioned Naoimhin Daly was a catalyst around midfield with centre back Laura McFarland a very steady presence and in a quicksilver attack which in the end shot an impressive tally of scores, Donna Teague and Michelle Corry were always sharp.
