‘If you want to make God laugh tell him your plans…’

This festive season Fr Brian D’Arcy will celebrate 50 years since his ordination as a priest at the chapel in St Michael’s College, Enniskillen.
Reflecting on half a century in the priesthood Fr Brian spoke to the Herald about his life as a Passionist priest, his time in Fermanagh and his hopes for the future.
The journey began in 1962 when the decision was taken to begin his clerical studies. It was a fellow priest at the Graan who had first planted the idea of a career of the cloth.
“Father Angelo said to me when I was about 15 did you ever think about becoming a priest? And, I said absolutely not, and he said I think you that you should think about it and in those days you done what the priest told you and I began to think about it.
“Two years passed I still wanted to give it a try. I never knew whether I would stay or not, yet, here I am still trying, 50 years later still going thank God.”
The popular priest also revealed his hopes for the years ahead.
When asked about his plans for the future Fr Brian joked, “If you want to make God laugh tell him your plans for the future.”
He then went on to say his real hope is to return to Fermanagh, “This year is a big year for the Passionist, every four years we have changes and it would be lovely to get back to Fermanagh. I don’t know if that will come true.
“I will keep working at whatever comes up as long as my health allows me and after that, which I hope will be a long time, I will retire and do whatever I have to do gracefully.”
