Teenager quoted over £18,000 for car insurance

A teenager just across the border in north Leitrim has been given an insurance quote of €18,693.90, for a car that is almost as old as he is.
The 18-year-old was trying to insure his 2004 Ford Fiesta when he got the eye-watering quote, which was raised at a recent meeting of Manorhamilton Municipal District council. The issue has since sparked a fierce debate across the country regarding the challenges facing young people in rural areas.
Insurance may be a bit cheaper in the North, however young people here in Fermanagh are facing the very same issues. A lack of proper public transport is universal in border rural areas, while very few young drivers can afford a new car meaning they are reliant on older models, which results in even higher premiums.
Have you or a loved one ever received an eye-watering insurance quote? Has the cost of car insurance meant you can’t afford to get on the road? Let us know on Facebook or email your thoughts to r.henderson@fermanaghherald.com
