A Lisbellaw mother panicked after being pulled over for speeding

A LISBELLAW mother who collided with a police car after being pulled over for speeding said she panicked and lost control of her car, a court has heard.

Connie Gilroy-Millar of Lebally Road, Cornashannel, appeared before Enniskillen Magistrates Court to face two charges of driving without due care and attention and speeding.

On March 7 police officers were on duty on the Drumeer Road, Maguiresbridge, checking the speed of passing vehicles.
Shortly before 8am Gilroy-Millar, 36, was on her way to work when she was clocked speeding at 52mph, one of the police officers stepped on to the carriageway and put up his hand to signal for the accused to stop.

Upon seeing the officer, Gilroy-Millar, who was driving her Peugeot 206 braked and swerved causing her to loose control of the vehicle.

The defendant then went into the side of the police vehicle where an officer was sitting.

The impact of the accident left her vehicle a right-off.

It also emerged that the injured police man has withdrawn from service suffering from whiplash because of the collision.

When questioned by the officers she told them that she was late for work and was rushing.

Defence solicitor told the court that his client had to swerve because of the speed she was travelling and couldn’t stop which then caused her to go into the right side of the police vehicle.

The married mother-of-two said she was running late for work and panicked when she saw the police officer.
The court heard that she fully accepted her wrong-doing and that she was “extremely remorseful and realises that the consequences could have been much more serious”.

Her solicitor also explained to the court that Gilroy-Millar suffered from difficult circumstances and that she was recovering from a serious illness and her husband had been involved in a serious accident in work and was unable to continue his job.

Sitting Judge Austin Kennedy handed down fines totalling £365 and endorsed four penalty points on her licence.
