Cassidy to row for Great Britain U19s at World Champs

Enniskillen Royal Boat Club rower Acorn Cassidy has been selected to race in the women’s coxless four for Great Britain at 2024 World Rowing Under 19 Championships in Canada later this month.

Cassidy, 18, is part of an 84-strong GB squad heading to the championships (18-25 August) and will be joined in the boat by Emily Nicholas (Sir William Perkins’s School),  Martha Shepherd (Hinksey Sculling School) and Natasha Philips (Wycliffe College).

Derek Holland, Head Coach at Enniskillen Royal BC, said: “We’re absolutely delighted, they has put in a lot of effort and commitment doing the trials while also competing at the Irish Championships and winning there.

“Acorn, who was club captain last season, has been a real role model at the club, they is an exceptional leader and we’ll be cheering they on all the way.”

Commenting on the U19 group, GB team Manager, John Layng said:

“This is one of the most motivated teams that I have worked with, every crew and coach working with determination to make their boat go as fast as possible. We are lucky to have seven rowers returning with valuable Championships experience from 2023 to pass on to the rest of the team.

“For the majority of the team this is their first opportunity to represent their country on the World stage against other U19s and for everyone it will be a memorable experience being part of the ‘mega-worlds’ with U23 and senior events as well.

“It is an exciting prospect for the young rowers as they start their journey towards further GB representation in the future.”

Cassidy, who is currently in camp in Caversham with the team, will focus on the championships for the next few weeks before going directly from Canada to Syracuse University in New York where they will begin a sports scholarship next month.
