A driver who didn’t know where the border was has been fined £275 and disqualified from driving for three months.

Nicolae Paul, of Newline, Cootehill, Cavan, appeared at Enniskillen Magistrates Court on Monday morning charged with no driving licence, no insurance and a defective tyre.

On the morning of July 22nd, the defendant drove a Renault Megane, on the A3 Cavan Road, Newtownbutler with no licence and no insurance. When stopped, it was also discovered that one of his rear tyres was bald.

The Court heard how Paul, who has been in Ireland since 1996, had held an out of date Southern provisional licence, having tried to do his test but could not pass it.

His defence also claimed how the defendant was very close to the border and did not know that he was in the North.

District Judge, Nigel Broderick fined Nicolae Paul £275 and disqualified him from driving for three months.
