Teenager Shannon Rose Mulligan woke up to a wonderful surprise on Saturday morning when her grandmother Anna Mulligan rang to tell her she was won a brand new car in the Graan car prize draw.
At first the Brookeborough girl (17) thought it was a ‘toy car’ but once she realised it was a real Vauxhall car she was over the moon.
“I was so shocked at first, but really over the moon. I’m so happy now,” said Shannon Rose. “I’m just looking forward to getting the car and getting out on the road.
But granny Anna interrupted, laughing, “Not before you get your drivers licence.”
“I’m going to have to wait a while then,” retorted Shannon Rose.
Asked if she would take granny for a drive on a Sunday afternoon, she replied, “yes of course.” And granny replied she would certainly sit with her!
Yesterday, Tuesday, Shannon Rose was given the keys to the new special edition Vauxhall Corsa Sting from Fr Brian D’Arcy of the Graan and Dessie Dolan from Lochside Garage at a presentation at the Graan.
Grandmother Anna, who lives in Roslea, explained that she got her draw tickets in the post.
“I sold one book and bought the other one myself. I get tickets every year and I put the grandchildren’s names on them including Shannon Rose. I think that brought a bit of luck this year.
Shannon Rose explained, “I was still sleeping on Saturday morning when Granny rang me around 10 o’clock with the news.
“It was a real surprise. I didn’t even know that she had put my name into the draw. Mummy reacted more than me. She was running around the house.
“I thought it was toy car at first,” said Shannon Rose, before Granny Anna interrupted laughing, “I wondered why she wasn’t excited when I phoned her. I explained that she had won this car and she asked, “is it a toy car?”
“I think she was really shocked when I told her it was a real one,” said grandmother Anna.
