Elderly householders warned over ‘rogue traders’

HOUSEHOLDERS in Fermanagh are being asked by the PSNI this week to look out for elderly neighbours.

Their appeal follows an incident in the county last month in which ‘rogue’ traders canvassing for work targeted an elderly person.
A police spokesman stated: “Allowing a rogue trader into your home or garden also carries the risk of allowing a stranger, with no verifiable identification, recommendation or company background, onto your premises where they can see your valuables and ways into your home.

“The level of work, if id often these people return to attempt to gain further payments for unnecessary work.”
Hence the PSNI warning  to householders to be cautious if they are approached by door to door traders who call at their home without an appointment offering services or goods for sale.

The PSNI spokesman admitted there is no foolproof way of recognising rogue workmen.
“However”, she went on, “in the past, we have had callers offering to sell products or to tarmac driveways, do gardening work, gutter replacements or power washing roofs and driveways.

“Such ‘traders’ normally do not carry identification, they are reluctant to give an estimate in writing and will normally ask for cash. All this should set the alarm bells ringing straightaway. A genuine caller won’t mind waiting while their ID is checked.”

Householders are advised to keep front and back doors locked, and to always ask for an identity card and check it carefully.
They should call Quick Check to confirm if someone is from the organisation they claim to represent by phoning 0800 013 22 90.

“If a doorstep seller or trader refuses to leave your premises, close the door and dial 999. If in any doubt, keep them out.”
Crime prevention advice on home security is available by calling 101 and ask for the Crime Prevention Officer.
