ONE of the most successful companies in Fermanagh is facing a number of serious charges in relation to the safety of employees at their Lisnaskea factory.

Charles Crawford of Ready Egg Products Limited, Crom Road, Lisnaskea, appeared before a preliminary enquiry on Monday in relation to a number of offences.

The company stands accused that on August 21, 2014 it failed to ensure, so far as was reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of all employees as well as failing to make a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks to the health and safety of employees while they were at work.
On the same date the company faces a further charge of failing to ensure that all persons who used work equipment had available to them adequate health and safety information and, where appropriate, written instructions pertaining to the use of the work equipment.

The final charge the company faces, also from August 21, 2014, is that it failed to ensure that measures were taken which were effective to prevent access to any dangerous part of machinery or to any rotating stock-bar, or to stop the movement of any dangerous part of machinery or rotating stock-bar before any part of a person enters a danger zone.

The prosecutor in court said the accused had a prima facie case to answer and the defence solicitor made no contrary submissions at this time. District judge Nigel Broderick said he was satisfied there was a prima facie case to answer.

When asked if he wished to say anything to the charges Mr Crawford replied: “No”.
When asked if he wished to give evidence himself or call any witnesses on his behalf, he again responded: “No”.

The matter will be returned for arraignment at Omagh Crown Court on May 17 and Mr Crawford was released on his own bail of £500, with no conditions attached.
