BATS… Crom Castle pays host to an ‘Bat Night’

IF YOU HAVEN’T experienced a Bat Night at Crom, don’t miss the return of Bat detectives on Thursday August 28 at 8pm.

Bats are amongst Ireland’s most fascinating, but also perhaps its most misunderstood mammals.

Capable of living in huge colonies, with thousands of individuals, bats are also able to detect minute insects whilst flying between twigs and branches, all in total darkness.

Crom Estate is one of the most important sites in Northern Ireland for bats, with all eight Northern Ireland species recorded on the estate.

Here bats feed on a wide variety of insects in Crom’s woodlands and parklands, along farmland hedgerows and even over open water.

As well as excellent feeding opportunities, Crom also provides bats with plentiful roosting and hibernating sites, whether it be an old boathouse or stable yard, or a 300 year old oak or ash tree.

At Crom’s annual bat event, you can learn more about these intriguing creatures, see them leave a roost for a night of feeding, and even see one or two close up.

Warm weatherproof clothing, walking shoes and a torch are advisable.  As places are limited for this fascinating bat night, it is advisable to book in advance.

Children are welcome.  Admission is £8.00 for adults, £4.00 for children and £20 per family.
