Our health and beauty blogger, Catherine McCurry, takes a look at that perfect smile…
I’M ALWAYS very envious of people who have glistening white teeth, who look like they have never eaten a sweet or drank a cup of coffee in their life and manage to radiate that Hollywood smile.
Up until a few years ago my teeth were standard white but over the years and thanks to some of those sugar-packed foods, they have lost their shine and a dull white colour has set over them.
A lot of my friends are either whitening their teeth at their dentist or using teeth whitening home kits, and they all look better for it – but it’s something I have never got into, as much as I want white teeth.
I underwent a number of clean and polish treatments at my dentists but that just wipes away the plaque and leaves your teeth feeling clean, there’s no Hollywood smile glowing back at you in the mirror.
Another problem I suffer is crooked teeth on the bottom row along the front. It’s not something that bothers me too much but it’s the front two teeth and I’ll always have it unless I do something about it.
Your smile is the first thing that people see when you meet them and I always find that if you suffer from stained, crooked teeth, it’s one of the first things I’ll notice.
It’s very expensive to go to the dentist every time you want to get your teeth whitened and at approximately £300 a go, I can understand why more and more people are turning to DIY kits.
There are plenty of whitening kits to chose from in supermarkets, including electric toothbrushes.
The road to cleaner teeth starts with a good toothbrush. One that I continue to see popping up in reviews is the Phillips Sonicare elite toothbrush which costs a heart-stopping £129.
This is a bit steep for a toothbrush but if you see it as an investment then a lot of dentists say that it helps remove stains from the surface helping teeth back to their original colour.
A cheaper alternative I found is the Oral-B Professional Care, which costs £30.
One of the best DIY teeth whitening kits is the Dr George’s Dental White Home Teeth Whitening System which costs £24.
It claims to give up to 11 shades whiter in three weeks.
First you create your own rubber teeth moulds with the warm and form mouth trays which become pliable in hot water then you then press them onto your teeth.
Then once a day, syringe a thin layer of gel into the tray and place over your teeth for 20 to 30 minutes, rinse and repeat three times every sitting.
It does take a bit of time and practice getting used, but well worth the effort.
