A RECOVERING drug addict from Fermanagh has explained why he helped establish a weekly meeting of Narcotics Anonymous (NA) in Enniskillen.

Martin (not his real name) wants to let people who may have a problem with drugs of any sort, and who want to quit, that NA now hold a meeting in the Aisling Centre every Wednesday evening and anyone is welcome to come along. The only requirement is a desire to stop using.

Martin had attended Narcotics anonymous meetings outside Fermanagh but felt there was a great need here for local meetings.

“During my recovery from drug addiction it became apparent that drug (abuse) was a huge problem in Fermanagh. Having been a long term member of Narcotics Anonymous and having attended meetings further afield and got the support I needed we decided to be proactive and develop a meeting here in the Fermanagh area” he said.

Martin said there is as big a drug problem in Fermanagh as there is an alcohol problem – from abuse of prescription drugs right up to, and including class A drugs such as cocaine and ecstasy.

“I used drugs to help me cope with life, and I would have taken anything to make me feel better – coke, ecstasy or legal highs.”

He said the good thing about NA meetings is you get a chance to talk to people who have been through the same problems as you – no matter where they come from, or what they do in life.

Asked was there a profile of the people who have been attended the meetings over the past three months Martin said people from all walks of life attend, but said the meetings are all about recovery and with about coping with life ‘after drugs’.

“The meetings are now running over three months and new people are attending all the time – they will definitely be continuing here,” he added.
