MOTORISTS across Fermanagh have one thing in common with their urban counterparts, some of them have been caught on camera travelling at excess speed.
There are five ‘mobile camera’ sites in the county, and, last week, the NI Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) published the number of detections at each for last year, and the months in which drivers were detected, using data supplied by the PSNI.
And, while the stats for some sites in the Belfast area are alarming – with 4,229 motorists caught breaching the 30 mph by a prolific speed camera on the Antrim Road – drivers here would do well to keep an eye on the clock.
Of the five sites where mobile cameras were in use last year, the Cornagrade Road, Enniskillen showed up 362 speedsters.
Next in line was Derrylin main street where 115 motorists breached the recently-introduced 30 mph limit.
This route was previously a ‘community concern’ site where, acciording to NISRA, a well-founded concern, about speeding vehicles, was raised with the local Policing and Community Safety Partnership and the local commander.
The report explains: “The concern was that a failure to reduce speeds will result in KSIs (killed or serious injuries) and that the location poses a significant risk to road safety. Once approved for enforcement, camera operators use temporary signs at these locations.”
Ironically, the third mobile camera outpost, on the Eniskillen-Derrylin 509 road, nabbed just six offenders, but some motorists using the Enniskillen-Lisbellaw A4 road, all 75 of them, weren’t so fortunate.
From time to time, the Belfast Road at Maguiresbridge features in the local papers for high speeds and, Last year, there were 12 of these detected.
So, are motorists learning their lesson?
Yes, it seems so from those mobile camera sites where there are statistics from the previous year. For instance, for the whole of 2013, there were 496 detections on the Cornagrade Road compared to 362 for last year.
Likewise, the 75 detections for last year on the Enniskillen-Lisbellaw A4 road compares with 172 speedsters the previous year.
