DETAILS on over £1 million worth of investment in local schools have been revealed by the Department of Education.
Four schools in the county are part of a ‘minor works scheme’ and are among 74 across the north to receive funding.
In Enniskillen, both St Joseph’s College and St Michael’s College have received upwards of £300, 000 each for works to the schools.
The work in St Joseph’s is to begin over the coming months and the £350, 000 for the college will see refurbishment in the music department, toilets and to provide modular accommodation for the careers and sixth form areas.
The contracts for work to be carried out at St Joseph’s College, Enniskillen have been awarded to Greystone Joinery & Construction Ltd, Dungannon.
The roof and windows at St Michael’s College are to be refurbished in a £370, 000 investment, with the contract awarded to Cleary Contracts, Antrim.
The highest beneficiary of funding is St Ronan’s Primary School in Lisnaskea.
The department indicated that the ‘minor work’ on the school is in two parts and includes the upgrading of the heating system.
The contract here has been awarded to Down Developments in Lurgan.
And, in Teemore, St Mary’s Primary School is to receive an investment of close to £170, 000.
This is for the upgrading of the heating system and to refurbish the toilet areas, including a provision of a disabled toilet at the school.
This contract has been awarded to Lowry Building Contractors, Castlederg.
Welcoming the investment, Education Minister John O’Dowd said: “A total of 74 minor works projects amounting to over £8million were agreed in June across all board areas, providing ongoing investment in the schools estate.
“I am confident that the substantial investment in minor works projects will help in the drive to improve educational standards in addition to providing a boost to the local construction industry.
“The completion of all of these works will ultimately provide better facilities for our children and young people to learn in and an improved working environment for teachers and other school staff.”
