Fermanagh historian shares stories of Enniskillen

A PROUD Fermanagh historian has shared his stories of Enniskillen on the Waterways Through Time podcast.
Season three of Waterways Ireland’s acclaimed Waterways Through Time podcast is currently underway.
Hosted by historian Turtle Bunbury, it features proud Fermanagh man and highly regarded Irish language novelist and historian Séamus Mac Annaidh, who adds a deep personal touch, bringing the past to life with tales of his childhood in Enniskillen.
Séamus Mac Annaidh shares insights on Irish writers and how the waterways influenced their craft.
As well as this, he recalls stories of the monks who compiled the Annals of Ulster on Belle Isle, the school where Oscar Wilde and Samuel Beckett studied, and a poem about American GIs playing baseball amid the ruins of Devenish Island.
Season three also features engaging interviews with a number of contemporary men and women who share their unique perspectives on these historical waterways.
Throughout the season, Turtle Bunbury continues his captivating journey along the waterways of Ireland, turning his focus to the creation of the Grand Canal and the Royal Canal.
Listeners can discover how these monumental engineering feats influenced the evolution of the Shannon and Barrow River systems.
Each episode is packed with fascinating and lesser-known facts that shed new light on Ireland’s rich history.
