Accessible bikes are a huge hit at Forum Fun Day

AT the recent JustUs sports event at in Enniskillen, the Lakeland Forum’s accessible bikes proved the biggest hit of the day. Unfortunately, despite the joy they bring to many, the accessible bikes are simply not that accessible!
Shelley Cowan, founder of JustUs explained that, unlike other areas including Omagh, those who fancy a cycle cannot simply call up to book and hire one of the adaptive bikes from the Forum, and instead they must be part of a group.
“Unfortunately many accessible or adaptive sports and activities are not available to use as and when people want to, on a Sunday with their friends and family, on even on a sunny morning or afternoon,” she told the ‘Herald.
“Most people in society can hop on a bike any day of the week at anytime. This is not the case for individuals with disability who require accessible or adaptive bikes. Everyone should have the opportunity to cycle at any time just like anyone else!”
Shelley added, “The accessible bikes are a fantastic way for those with reduced mobility to exercise and experience the outdoor activities. However the accessible bikes are extremely expensive for individuals to purchase their own.
“Users also need to know which bike suits their individual needs and abilities.”
Shelley said there had been “plenty of fun, laughter and competition on the race track” at the recent JustUs sports day.
“One attendee said they felt a dream had come true as they found a bicycle they could use unaided,” she said. “Others were experiencing the accessible bikes for the first time and some were lapping all afternoon.
“Imagine a day when everyone can cycle when they want!”
JustUs member Julieanna Richmond shared her joy at finding a bike she could use unaided following the recent event.
“I can cycle again,” she said. “I was never off a bike when I was younger. Now I’m proud to be back at it again.
“A big thank you to JustUs for organising this. I’m having a blast. I’m free to be me again. I can’t stop smiling.”
Julieanna added, “I just wish we would be allowed to phone the leisure centre and book a bike without having to wait until there is a set time for a group to go out together.
“We would love to cycle when we want like everyone else that is privileged to own an accessible bike.”
Shelley concluded, “Accessible bike hire is available in Omagh leisure centre and it would be fantastic for everyone if The Fermanagh Lakeland Forum were able to offer this facility and choice too.
“Not only for locals but tourist would also enjoy the accessible bikes.”
When contacted by the ‘Herald, a Council spokesman said it was “committed to providing equality of opportunity for all.”
“As part of that commitment the Council has invested in a range of disability accessible and inclusive bikes located at Fermanagh Lakeland Forum and Omagh Leisure Complex. In June 2024, the Council arranged training for its staff in the maintenance and management of these bikes and is happy to be able to highlight the opportunities for those interested in using this equipment.
“Each Tuesday in July and August (between 4-5pm) Fermanagh Lakeland Forum has organised supervised group inclusive bike sessions. These are aimed at anyone interested in finding out more about the bikes and include an induction to their use. These sessions are being offered free of charge.
“At both Fermanagh Lakeland Forum and Omagh Leisure Complex, customers can use the bikes on the grounds of the Centres. They are available at £4 per session and, to ensure the bike is ready, must be booked in advance. To book a place on the Fermanagh Lakeland Forum’s Tuesday sessions customers can book online (www.FermanaghOmagh.com, Fermanagh Lakeland Forum, Courses – book online), by calling 028 6632 4121 or in person at the centre.”
