Outrage at delays fixing one of county’s busiest roads

The length of time taken to carry out roadworks on the one of Fermanagh’s busiest roads has been blasted as ‘outrageous’.
The A509 runs from Enniskillen through Derrylin and Teemore to the Co Cavan border.
A temporary speed limit has been introduced near Mackan slowing traffic to 40mph while work is progressed. This is due to run until May 2020.
Reflecting the sentiment of residents community activist Brian McManus said, “Where in the world would you get a main arterial route with a speed limit of 40mph in the middle of it. This has been going on for years and it’s an outrage that we should have to put up with this length of time.
“This is a main arterial route to Dublin and Donegal and in between that you have a lot of Fermanagh people. The volume of vehicles on that road is unbelievable, there’s thousands every day.
“I’m surprised there’s not more accidents on it. I keep saying we’re in a Third World situation here, that’s basically what it is.”
Also of concern is the lack of support for residents. “The whole A509 needed upgraded a long time ago. We don’t have anyone to speak for us because we don’t have an Assembly, that is another issue. There is no question that this has slowed progress.
“There are only people like ourselves in the community concerned about this. When you are living here you have to use this road every day.”
