Sadness at the death of Donagh GAA club stalwart

THE community in Donagh has been shocked at the unexpected death of one of their footballing stalwarts James McCabe of Alexander Rise. 
Jimmy, a founder member of St Patrick’s GFC in Donagh, was instrumental in the development of the new Louis Leonard Memorial Park, also overseeing the development of the clubhouse and changing facilities. He was a three time ‘clubman of the year’ winner in the late 1980s and early 1990s. 
His proudest moment was watching St Pat’s win the Fermanagh Senior Championship in 2008. 
Having played for St Pat’s for several years, he went on to take up the role of club treasurer along with working behind the bar in the clubhouse. 
Born in the townland of Killyfole, Jimmy was the second eldest child of Terence and Bridget McCabe. He attended Cornageague Primary School and later St Patrick’s Primary School Ballagh. 
In his early years he worked locally and became heavily involved in Knocks Grattans GAA club, winning many titles and serving on several committees. 
Jimmy temporarily moved to England before returning in late 1964 after the death of his father. He returned to football winning an Intermediate Championship with Knocks Grattans in 1968.
After meeting his wife Alice in 1969 the couple settled in Ballagh and raised a family of four. 
Following his playing days Jimmy took up refereeing and was involved in several league and championship finals. 
A joiner and builder he was recognised as a skilful and tidy worker. He worked on several projects in Fermanagh and Clones including the redevelopment of the Famine Graveyard in Clones. 
Jimmy’s other interests outside the GAA including Traditional Irish Music, Ceilis, attending dances with Alice and his vegetable plot which he managed passionately. 
After losing a leg in 2001 Alice became his carer and the couple moved to Donagh in 2008. 
A regular Mass attender he visited Knock annually and also Lourdes.
He is survived by his wife Alice and  children Sinead (Ciaran), Damian (Margaret), Brian (Brenda) and Edel (Ross), and grandchildren 
Following Requiem Mass in St Patrick’s Church, Donagh the burial was the to the adjoining graveyard.
Jimmy’s Month’s Mind Mass will be celebrated on Saturday 5th October at 6:30pm in St. Patrick’s Church, Donagh
