Next step considered for town bypass

The next steps on the long-awaited Enniskillen Southern Bypass are now under consideration by the Department for Infrastructure.
An update on the bypass forms part of a comprehensive western roads report produced by DFI Roads. The report opens by outlining that since 2013 the DFI’s basline resouce budget has been ‘insufficient’ to meet its needs and it has relied on in year funding to deliver core services including public transport and winter gritting.
Going forward this year budgets are still facing a squeeze, with almost 70 per cent of the 2019/20 budget taken up with committed  or priority projects.
Providing an update on the progress of the A4 Enniskillen Southern Bypass it was noted that a preferred route was announced in July 2011.
When asked for an update on the project and funding a spokesman for DFI explained, “A public information day was held in April 2018 when the preferred route was presented to the public. The Department considered all the comments received to this consultation and in January 2019, given the very low number of objections received to the scheme, decided that a public inquiry into the scheme proposals was not required. The Department is currently considering the next steps for the scheme.”
The bypass would link to the A4 Dublin Road and enable through traffic to bypass the town centre.
