Caused ‘wanton damage’ in ex-girlfriend’s home

Court

Enniskillen Courthouse

AN Enniskillen man has to pay his ex-girlfriend’s mother compensation after going into their home without permission and causing damage.
Nathan Bryans (27) of Galliagh Park appeared at Enniskillen Magistrates Court on Monday where he pleaded guilty to criminal damage and common assault.
On Sunday December 3rd, Bryans’ ex-girlfriend’s mother was at home when she heard someone coming in. She called out and when no one responded she thought it was her son.
It was Bryans who had entered the house, and he proceeded to cause approximately £100 of damage, breaking items such as photo frames and candle holders, and knocking things over such as books and lamps.
Defence barrister Ciaran Roddy said the common assault charge was a ‘technical assault, with no contact, but said an aggravating factor was that it had occurred in her own home, and that it occurred in the context of a previous relationship. Mr Roddy added the damage had been “wanton.”
District Judge Michael Ranaghan sentenced Bryans, who had previous convictions but had not re-offended since 2014 prior to this incident, to 18 months probation and 80 hours community service. He also fined him a total of £200 and ordered him to pay £250 compensation to his ex-girlfriend’s mother.
