Frustrated tourist slams lack of camper parking

No overnight parking or camping sign at the Lakeland Forum

A TOURIST who was forced to leave Enniskillen as she was unable to find suitable parking for her camper van has voiced her anger and frustration.
The woman was asked to move from a car park in the centre of the town and was unable to find a place to park as she wanted to walk around Enniskillen.
Speaking to the Herald, the woman said, “Where are we supposed to park? The town is not doing much for the tourists who are passing by and wish to visit the town with their camper vans for the day.”
Although there is a number of sites available outside of town, the woman stated that there were no facilities in the centre of the town for those who wish to park up and visit.
Local councillor, Alex Baird said: “Parking space in Enniskillen is oversubscribed and indeed at a premium. The unique nature and appeal of Enniskillen as an island town contributes to this.
“The previous council tried to address the issue of motor home parking by offering grant aid for the provision of service facilities providing water supply, electricity connection and sewage disposal for motor homes but no-one took up the offer.
“Having said that, there are several parking facilities suitable for motor homes convenient to Enniskillen run by the private sector.”
Councillor Raymond Farrell also addressed the issue saying: “Obviously it is disappointing to learn that someone had to leave the town in these circumstances. I think if there is evidence to suggest that the town itself could do better, then that should be looked at.”
A spokesperson for the Fermanagh and Omagh District Council said:
“There are no overnight facilities for camper vans in Enniskillen town. Around Enniskillen there are a number of caravan parks and camping facilities that cater for camper vans. Details of these can be found through contacting the Visitor Information Centre or on the Fermanagh and Omagh District Council website under Visiting Fermanagh and Omagh.”
