FOUR Fermanagh students are set to fly the flag for Ireland in America this August.
Sophie Richmond, Roisin Conlon, Katie Wray and Lucy McManus have all been selected to take part in the British Council’s prestigious Study USA programme. The four girls will study business while in America.
Sophie, a human nutrition student at Ulster University, will be heading to the University of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Rosin, who currently studies Leisure and Events Management at Ulster University is off to Maryville College, Tennessee, while Katie 20, also a student at Ulster University, will spend the next academic year at Evansville, Indiana. St Mary’s University College Student Lucy, 21 will study business at Saint Leo University, Florida.
Former Devenish College student, Katie Wray jetted off on Monday, August 15th and is very excited for the year ahead.
“With my departure date fast approaching, excitement is rising as I prepare to study at the University of Evansville in Indiana. I can’t wait to experience life in America, although it is only starting to sink in that I will be away from home and my friends and family for such a long period of time, therefore as I expected I am beginning to get nervous. I am looking forward to meeting new people and studying within a different learning environment, which I hope will improve my confidence and motivate me when I return to undertake my final year of University.  I am also looking forward to making new friendships and contacts which I believe will be beneficial for my future life and career.”
In order to be chosen for the programme, the four Fermanagh girls has to undergo an extensive application process. The first stage of the application process was to answer a number of short essay style questions while the second round was a face to face interview. The girls then received confirmation that they had been selected to travel to America. The girls then had to select three universities that they would prefer to study at, and undergo another interview before being assigned to a university.
This year, the scholarship programme will give 53 Northern Ireland students the opportunity to study business and management for a year in American colleges, across 34 states, where they gain valuable international experience and business knowledge, helping to develop their career prospects when they return to Northern Ireland.
