IT SEEMS no-one is safe from theft in Fermanagh, with shrubs in a church yard the latest target for brazen thieves.

Before Christmas the Church of Ireland in Boho was hit by thefts of shrubs from a flower bed, with the cost estimated at as much as £150.

The incident, which took place some time between December 13 and December 14, 2015 has shocked a tight-knit rural community explained Boho parishioner Danny Redmond.

Mr Redmond, a landscape gardener, planted the shrubs three years ago and was one of the first to notice that they had been stolen.

“Just outside the church yard in Boho there’s the wee car park and they were planted there and from there they were taken,” Mr Redmond told the Herald.

He continued: “You wouldn’t expect thieves to steal plants, especially at a church. I’ve never come across it and I’ve been around a bit. You hear about oil getting taken, things like that, but never shrubs. They weren’t doing any harm, they were just there to enhance an old flower bed.”

Mr Redmond, a parishioner in Boho for the past ten years, called the thefts “strange” and said those at the church were undecided over whether to replant in the flower bed or grass over the area.

“There were two conifers that would be very valuable, they’re sort of low dwarf cedars, you could probably sell them for £30/£40 each, but the rest wouldn’t have been overly valuable. It’s just strange.”
