A YOUNG Florencecourt man who has done three terms in Third World countries has raised £4,000 from a sponsored wheelbarrow push around this year’s Belfast City Marathon course.
It took him six hours to complete the trek for the charity, serve.ie which works in 15 Third World countries.
Christopher Stranney (22), who works in his father’s The Smart Storage joinery company in F.R.Cathcart’s, Enniskillen, had the idea for the barrow push from his experiences in South Africa (twice) and Zambia.
“I wanted to show people that this was the only transport that some people in Zambia and South Africa have to get to the nearest clinic and, as well as that, the length of the journey and the time it takes getting there.”
He estimated that for that person to take a bus or taxi, in South Africa, to do the journey would set them back 1,000 rand, about £100 – which they don’t have.
Having made the barrow himself, Christopher festooned it with the names of the eight sponsoring firms and, of course, the charity.
“It did create a lot of interest. In fact, two runners took over the pushing to give me a break. It was easy enough at the start but, towards the end, the barrow felt like it was full of concrete.
I was glad to see it finished.”
