THOUSANDS WERE STOLEN from a vulnerable Ederney woman as she attended a funeral, in yet another theft in rural Fermanagh.
Between 10.30am and 2pm on July 7, sterling cash, euros and US dollars were taken, most in 50 note denominations and a couple of hundred dollar bills, from a house on the Castlederg Road in Ederney.
Inspector Roy Robinson told the Herald “quite a bit” of money was taken amounting to “thousands” of pounds in value. He explained that at the time the victim had been attending a funeral and while she was away from the property the thieves struck.
“I would say someone knew that lady was out attending a funeral when that money was taken,” remarked Mr Robinson.
Local UUP councillor Rosemary Barton has condemned the Ederney theft and warned people to take the necessary checks at their homes.
“This is a most despicable act, and even more deplorable as I understand this burglary took place when the occupant of the house was attending a funeral.
“To try to deter this type of crime, I would appeal to people to rethink about keeping sums of money in their homes and also check that there doors and windows are locked when leaving their homes, even for the shortest period of time.”
Police have made an appeal for witnesses following the theft and urge anyone with information to come forward.
In another incident police investigating a burglary in the Kinawley area of Fermanagh have arrested two men. A 23-year-old man and a 19-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of burglary on Tuesday, July 14th. Both were released on bail pending further enquiries.
