A 13-year-old boy from Belcoo is fighting for his life in a Belfast hospital following an incident involving another student at an Enniskillen school on Monday.
St Michael’s College student Oisin McGrath was taken to the South West Acute Hospital on Monday afternoon, however, he was later transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast where he remained critically ill yesterday.
A 17-year-old boy was arrested following the incident.
The injured boy’s parents, Nigel and Sharon McGrath, maintained a bedside vigil with parish priest Fr Seamus Quinn.
The school’s principal, Eugene McCullough, issued a statement to the Fermanagh Herald.
He said: “A group of students were playing at lunch time when one student became unwell and they sought medical assistance.
“He was taken to the South West Acute Hospital for medical help.”
The school would not confirm or deny that the student was injured by another pupil. However, Detective Inspector David Hallawell said the the 17-year-old was arrested on Monday following an assault at a school in Enniskillen. A spokesman for the PSNI said: “A 13-year-old boy is in a serious condition in hospital following the incident which was reported to police at around 2.45pm.
“The arrested teenager was later released on bail pending further enquiries.”
Paul McGrath, coach of the Belcoo under-14 side described Oisin as a ‘good quiet lad’.
“He’s one of the young boys who gives you everything at training and helps out afterwards lifting cones and things,” he added.
“He would be one of our main men and we’re keeping him in our thoughts and prayers,” he added.
