THE RUSH to get your parcels and cards from all over the world into your Fermanagh home in time for Christmas continues at Enniskillen sorting office.
Staff at the sorting office on the Tempo Road, Enniskillen and on delivery duty are still working around the clock.
Royal Mail has handled hundreds of thousands of items of Christmas mail in the county over the festive period – with Saturday past its busiest day.
On that day it handled 40,000 Christmas items including cards, online deliveries and presents – which is double the amount that staff usually deal with.
The service has over 50 postmen and women on duty, with additional vehicles to their normal fleet of 35 acquired to help deal with the Christmas rush.
“It would be busier than last year parcel wise. We’ve been busy since mid November. Parcels have increased year on year due to online delivery,” explained Mark Cullen, delivery service manager.
As for the sending of Christmas cards, he said that he didn’t feel that the number had decreased. National figures show that the average number of cards that people intend to send sits at 17.
And as for the feeling in the sorting office?
“We’re very busy – the staff seem happy enough. Although they are working longer hours,” he said.
Royal Mail delivers to more than 13,000 addresses in the Enniskillen region covering Belleek to Irvinestown in addition to Enniskillen itself. Their total daily mileage for some delivery routes is around 80 miles.
