Roadworks are a regular site throughout the county

LAST night, Fermanagh councillors met with representatives of the roads service, now TransportNI, who reported on progress in investing some £4.4million in schemes across the county this year.

They heard that work on the £250,000 resurfacing contract on the A4 Belfast Road at Tattenaheglish was completed in September.

And, the minister, in a statement, said he was suitably impressed: “This essential road improvement scheme involved resurfacing of 1.2km of carriageway and it will greatly improve the strength and surface quality of the carriageway on a main route between Enniskillen and Belfast.”

Members heard that a wide range of maintenance and road improvement schemes was planned or already completed in the district council area.

But, officials warned about the impact of budget cuts on his department.

“It is affecting road improvement schemes and routine maintenance of the road network.”

But, while there remained pressures on capital budgets, his officials said they would continue to develop both local transport and safety measures and resurfacing schemes to enhance safety, improve traffic flow and provide measures for pedestrians and cyclists.

The Divisional Roads Manager, Conor Loughrey highlighted a number of improvement schemes currently planned or progressed.

He referred to the completion of an improvement to the sightlines at C425 Teiges Hill and U9428 Carrickyheenan Road, Brookeborough, the B107 Clabby Road/U9578 Killyliss Road junction, Clabby itself and the substantial completion of the cycle track at the A4 Dublin Road/U6513 Lough Yoan Road, Enniskillen.
