Blacklion may be a small club but it has some big players.
Captain Thomas Cullen led his team to a spectacular victory over Omagh Golf Club to win the Lawson Cup.
After taking 6.5 points in Omagh, Darren Boyle and Peter Robinson got Blacklion off to a great start by winning the first match 3.5 – 0.5. Captain Tommy and club captain Jim Leonard had a 4 – 0 clean sweep in match two.
With Peter Cumiskey and Kevin McElhatton assured of at least half a point, Gerry Hickey and Brian Melarky secured the necessary two points to reach the 10 points needed for victory.
Team captain Tommy congratulated his team for their commitment and pride in representing the club. He also thanked the other members of his panel who had contributed to the success in earlier rounds; Martin Monaghan, Jimmy Donovan, James McGrath, Aiden Wynne and Sean Flanagan.
Team success does not end there – after securing a 3 – 2 away win, Ulster Fourball team captain Pat Gallery retained the same team for the home leg of the semi-final and achieved a similar score. In the final, they will face either Clones or Portstewart and Pat is confident that his panel of players will produce the goods.
Not to be outdone, Patsy McCorry’s Cavan/Monaghan Alliance team is also through to the final of this competition.
With such strength in depth throughout the club, it is becoming more difficult to win a club competition. In the August monthly medal, Ciaran Maguire shot a gross 77 and won only the gross prize. Sean Leonard shot a fine 64 but was pipped by the resurgent Mark Connolly. “Skino” playing off 11 recorded a superb 63.
