At around 1.30am on April 21, police were called to the Loughshore road in Enniskillen following a report of a one vehicle crash.

When officers arrived they saw a green Ford Fiesta in the ditch at the side of the road and the female driver, the defendant, was receiving treatment from paramedics for minor injuries.

The defendant was taken in the ambulance to hospital and police followed.

Detecting a smell of alcohol on her breath police carried out the procedure to test the level of alcohol in the woman’s blood.

A reading of 132 mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood was given – 52 above the limit of 80. She was charged with driving with excess alcohol in blood.

Garry Smyth, defending, asked the court to give the defendant credit for her early guilty plea and the fact she had co-operated fully with police.

Mr Smyth said his client accepted she had been drinking. He also handed the judge a letter from her GP setting out medical issues.

“The loss of her licence will have a significant impact on her life” continued Mr Smyth, who said the defendant was willing to undertake the drink-drivers course.

Deputy District Judge Liam McStay  said the defendant had obviously made efforts to deal with issues affecting her life,  and she deserved credit for this.

In addition to the 12 month disqualification a fine of £200 was imposed with the judge certifying her suitable for the drink-drivers course.
