Top student opting to stay local

Erne Integrated College - A Level Results

Lloyd Bridge from Enniskillen wants to work with wind turbines in the future after achieving good results in his exams at Erne Integrated College

AN ENNISKILLEN student is bucking the trend when it comes to second level education.

Erne Integrated A-Level pupil Lloyd Bridge has opted to study a foundation degree in engineering in a local college instead of a familiar route of university.

The 18-year-old from Enniskillen is studying Wind Turbines at the South West College in Omagh next month as he embarks on a two year foundation degree.

He explained: “I studied technology and design and two Btechs, engineering and construction. I’m going on to study Wind Turbines at college and I’m really looking forward to getting out and about and up inside the turbine to see the internals because I quite like mechanics and how everything works.

“That was the driver for that course plus wind turbines is the future and we are in the west here with the wind in the Atlantic so there’s plenty of experience to gain.

“The exam process was quite daunting but the course work was fine, I wouldn’t be the best theoretical person but it wasn’t too bad. I got the results I wanted.”

Erne Integrated acting principal Sharon McKee explained some of the benefits of studying locally.

“It’s great that students have choice, particularly when there is the financial situation of going away and maybe running up very high debts at the end of a degree course and of course ensuring that your job in the future life really affords you the opportunity of paying it back,” she stated. “We often read of students caught in that situation.

“South West College has worked hard to provide well, not just in post-school but at key stage four too.

“If they want to stay on locally they can do so and I think it’s great that Lloyd can do that.”
