On April 16 this year police were called to a disturbance in a residential area of Enniskillen.

When they arrived the defendant was standing out in the street and had a cut to his eye. He asked police for a lift home despite being outside his house.

An ambulance was called for the defendant and he told police to ‘F*** off’. The defendant was placed on the ground by police but while down he continued to shout abuse and spat at officers.

When the ambulance arrived the defendant was brought to his feet but then lunged forward at the paramedic attempting to headbutt him.

Later that evening the defendant was discharged from hospital but when he refused to go to the police cell and kicked out at one officer, striking them on the thigh.
Barrister Gavin Cairns, defending, said a number of charges had already been withdrawn against this defendant and pointed out no injuries were caused to anyone during the course of this incident.

Mr Cairns said that police were initially called to the scene where the defendant himself had been assaulted and suffered a serious injury.

The barrister said the situation arose because the defendant was so intoxicated he couldn’t distinguish between police and ambulance staff trying to help him and those who had done him harm a short time earlier.
