FIVE athletes from Fermanagh travelled to Limerick last week for the Special Olympics 2014 national games.

The athletes showed great spirit and skill in all of the events they took part in and their hard work and dedication was rewarded with a wonderful haul of medals.

The Fermanagh athletes took part in events including running, softball and football.

Brian Wittendale won a gold medal in the 400 metres wheelchair race and also enjoyed success in the soft ball.

Laura Keenan won double gold – a gold medal in 25 metre run and also a gold medal in soft ball.

Joseph Wilson picked up bronze medals in 25 metre run and in softball.

Another of our local athletes Barry Cox picked up a wonderful silver medal in the 50 metre run and a fourth place in his softball event.

At just 10 years of age Conal Corrigan was the youngest athlete from Fermanagh to travel to the games and take part and he was rewarded with a silver in the 25 metre run.

Also taking part in the Special Olympics were three footballers from the county.

Level 1 player Mark Colgan’s team won a gold medal while Shane Swift (captain) and Lee Johnston played well in their Level 3 competition, with Lee scoring an impressive hat trick.
