Mallards finish season on a high

Whitey Anderson

Ballinamallard manager Whitey Anderson was delighted how his side finished the season

Saturday’s final day 3-0 victory over Warrenpoint Town pleased Ballinamallard United manager Whitey Anderson no end.

Finishing 10th instead of in the relegation bottom two is some difference according to the Ferney Park supremo.

The result means that Ballinamallard didn’t have to worry about being in a relelagation play off place and have been undefeated in their last six games. The only other team in the league to achieve that is champions Cliftonville.

The Mallards have won two and drawn four. In that they have come away with three clean sheets and only conceded two goals from play.

“I’m absolutely delighted for everybody involved in the football club, but especially the players.  I had asked them to make some sort of statement in the final six games and that’s just what they did,” he said.

It has been a long, tough season for everyone at Ferney Park, manager, backroom staff, players and supporters.

“It has been especially tough on the players, but everyone stuck together. You must give tremendous credit to them. They really dug in and did what was needed. They must get tremendous credit for what they have achieved this season. They showed what they are capable of.”

It means that Premier League football stays in Fermanagh for another year, a feat which, Anderson feels should be recognised by all the county.

“We’ve had a lot of good support from people all over the county and adjoining counties, but there have been people who have wanted to see Ballinamallard relegated. That’s the nature of sport sometimes and says more about them than us. But to all those who have given us their support in any way, we thank you.

“Once again their is a great opportunity for young players to play for a Premier League club and progress to the top level. We have something special here, that’s the reason we fought so hard to keep it. It was tough, but now we can build on a tough season. We have learned a lot of lessons in the last year and we know our short-comings. We must try to rectify them for what lies ahead,” said Anderson.

With the playing season over Anderson isn’t resting on his laurels. The Ballinamallard manager is already looking at players for the new season.

“It’s a long process and must be started now. We have to sell the club to prospective players. They must know what we are about and what we want to achieve,” he added.

But he believes that he has the nucleus of a quality team.

“I know we need to strengthen for next season. It was difficult to bring in young players in such a difficult season, but hopefully next season more young players will come through.

“It will be very special to have a third season in the Premiership and I’m delighted for everyone and the club as a whole.

“Now we have to plan for the future and make sure things aren’t as difficult,” said the Ballinamallard manager.
