ON FRIDAY Fermanagh pitched in for Sport Relief to help raise thousands for charity work both locally and abroad in the third world.

At the BT call centre in Enniskillen, local staff and those from further afield took calls for the charity and in the preceding weeks helped to raise thousands of vital funds.

Staff have went the extra mile notably through the efforts of Robert Wilson who swam 25 miles, Clive Lowry who walked 50 miles, Fiona Williamson who cycled 75 miles and Sarah Griffiths who endured a ‘week of hell’ akin to that of Davina McCall.

In total through their efforts staff have raised £6,548 and that doesn’t take into account their ‘copper mile’ or cake sale.

Anita Maguire, duty manager at BT in Enniskillen explained that this is not the first time staff have helped with the fundraising effort.

“This is our third year, last year we took calls for red nose day and the year before sport relief so it’s great to help out again. We were very lucky to get selected, there are only seven BT sites who get calls and it was a great honour for all of us.”

110 volunteers took calls on Friday night, 60 of those from Enniskillen, along with BT representatives from Belfast, Portadown, Derry, Dublin and Navan.

“Every year we get more and more people wanting to do because of the buzz around the place. We are partners with Comic Relief and 15 from the company went out to Tanzania to see how the money donated is spent first hand.

“The video of Tanzania shows kids playing football and getting education before going back to hard labour. It was very moving and just showed how worthwhile the cause is.”

It is not just BT though who went the extra mile, pupils at Jones Memorial have also got in on the act helping to create a ‘copper mile’ of small change around the BT office bringing in £126 of loose change while pupils also ran a mile for sports relief.
