LOCAL SCHOOL CHILDREN were treated to a visit from ‘a real life princess’ last week when the 2013 Rose of Tralee Haley O’Sullivan dropped in.

Pupils at St Mary’s Primary School, Mullymesker welcomed Haley, the Texas Rose, all the way from America and gave her a traditional Fermanagh welcome. The visit was arranged by Fermanagh Rose Julie-Ann McCaffrey, herself a former pupil at the school and was a ‘lovely treat’ for the young students.

Principal Helen Ingram reflected on a special day at the school.

“It was a lovely day. The children had prepared pictures, made roses and made flags both American and Texan. They had also got information on her and made up her profile and the older children asked her questions.

“They asked her did she like being the Rose and she said she loved it and then they asked her what she liked about Fermanagh and Ireland and she told them she loved Ireland, particularly Fermanagh, but said she wasn’t too fond of the weather. She was a nice, pleasant, well mannered girl and it was a pleasure to have her.”

The school pulled out all the stops for their special visitors , with the pupils learning and singing the Rose of Tralee song, reciting a poem and one pupil presenting a special card she made especially for Haley having been at the festival last year.

They also presented both Haley and Julie-Ann with flowers and in Haley’s case gave her a Belleek Pottery Rose vase. The school were also treated to a visit from Haley’s mother, who made the journey along with her daughter.

Mrs Ingram added: “It was a lovely day and they really, really enjoyed it. One of the wee ones said  ‘a real life princess’ has come to the school’, while one of the boys in P2 said ‘she’s just a beautiful princess’ and he never passes any comment on anything,” she laughed.

“It was a wonderful day and the wee ones in particular were amazed by the girls.”
