ANN Gormley – the first female chair of Omagh District Council – is set to make a return to electoral politics in a bid claim a seat for the Alliance Party in Enniskillen.

Ann is familiar with the community in Enniskillen from her time as a former pupil of Mount Lourdes Grammar School in the town and also through her work as a dental therapist for the Sperrin Lakeland Trust for 27 years.

She held the Omagh Town seat for nine years from 1993 to 2001 and was never actually defeated at the polls as she did not contest the election when her term ended. While some thought she had retired from politics she had instead  ‘took a rest’ , while continuing to keep a close eye on local issues.

Now refreshed, she is looking forward to making a return with the amalgamation of Omagh and Fermanagh District Councils.

On announcing her candidacy for  the 2014 Shadow Council elections Ann commented:

“I’m bringing my skills as a former councillor to the new challenging district council area. I want to offer the Enniskillen, Lisbellaw and Lisnarick communities an alternative to tribal voting, not based on religious or sectarian sentiment.

“I have a renewed energy and am looking forward to the campaign. I have never lost my enthusiasm for local politics and hope to promote further cross community and cross border opportunities for young people, while also concentrating on environmental issues and urban development.”
