A 46-year-old mother-of-three who drove her car in the wrong direction at a roundabout has, at Enniskillen Magistrates Court, been convicted of dangerous driving
Catherine Bermingham, of Lisgoole Park, Drumgallan, Enniskillen was fined £185 and disqualified from driving for a period of 12 months.
The incident of dangerous driving occurred on the Sligo Road, Enniskillen and deputy district judge Paul Conway said he was left in little doubt the driving had been dangerous.
He commented: “The initial one was careless pulling out in front of an oncoming car causing it to brake and including the incident at the roundabout that in my opinion is sufficient to be dangerous driving.”
Mr Conway felt that the driving fell below the necessary standards of a competent driver and, as the defendant had driven for a portion of the roundabout in the wrong direction, he had to convict her for the offence of dangerous driving.
Defence barrister Heather Phillips, told the court her client came in front of the court in a ‘sensitive position’.
While the defendant had a short record this was the first time she had appeared for dangerous driving.
The court were told that of Bermingham’s nine convictions. two of these were not related to driving.
Ms Phillips said the incident has had a traumatic effect on the defendant, and added that she had received ‘significant assistance’ for her sensitive disposition, that was ongoing.
She said her client regretted being before the court, and was determined not to appear before the courts again for driving matters.
