PSNI to press for prosecution after hit and run death

THE PSNI have said they intend to pursue a prosecution through the courts here in relation to the death near Belleek of a 49-year old man as a result of a suspected hit and run incident.

The deceased, Pat John McCafferty, a father of six, was fatally injured when he was struck by a car near his home on the Tullychurry Road at 2.50am on Sunday, 5th January.

Shortly afterwards, the PSNI issued an appeal to any member of the public who might have seen a blue Ford Focus car before or after the collision, or any suspicious activity in that time.

Later on Sunday, Gardai in Pettigo arrested a 40-year old man who was then brought to Ballyshannon Garda Station for questioning.

He was released the following day.

A Garda spokesman said a file would be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

This week, police in Enniskillen said they were continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.

Its spokesman added: “The blue Ford Focus believed to have been involved in the incident has been recovered, and police are continuing to liaise with our colleagues in An Garda Siochana in relation to this investigation.”

The PSNI spokesman acknowledged that a 40-year-old male was arrested by the gardai and had has since been released pending a report to the DPP in the Republic.

The spokesman said the PSNI would be continuing their appeal for any information following the incident that occurred at approximately 2.50am on 5th January.

“Anyone who was in the Tullychurry Road and/or Boa Island Road area before or after this time and saw the blue Ford Focus car, or any suspicious activity, is asked to contact police in Enniskillen on 0845 600 8000”, she added.

Mr McCafferty’s funeral Mass took place on Thursday of last week in St Mary’s Church, Pettigo.
