Local students shine at Young Scientist awards

FERMANAGH students who last week showcased their projects at the 50th BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition have been formally recognised at the awards ceremony at the RDS in Dublin.

Beating off stiff competition from 28 Northern Ireland finalists, Cliona Mulligan from Portora Royal received 3rd – Senior Individual award and the Environmental Protection Agency special award for her project ‘The demise of our hedgerow trees and shrubs – a consequence of the economic downturn and farm grant aid policy – implications for our environment’ which was entered into the Biological and Ecological category.

St Fanchea’s students Anna Kellagher and Kaylee Conlin received 2nd – Junior Group award and the Display Award for their project ‘Investigating the level and nature of radioactive emissions from soil samples’ which was entered into the Chemical, Physical  and Mathematical Sciences category.
