LIMBERING UP…Denise McCallion (Public Health Agency) and Barry Doherty (Vice Chairman, Fermanagh District Council – centre) lead the way in limbering up for the launch of the weekly ‘Couch Potato to Runner Bean’ fitness initiative at the Forum

A NEW ACTIVITY programme encouraging people to change their ways from ‘couch potato to runner bean’ was launched on Saturday in Enniskillen.

The free programme, organised by Fermanagh District Council in partnership with the Public Health Agency (PHA) and the National Trust at Castle Coole, has been set up to help people who are not currently taking part in physical activity to participate in a minimum of two 30-minute physical activity sessions each week.

Over the next ten weeks, participants will complete a walk, jog or run at their own pace, meeting at Enniskillen Bowling Green every Saturday morning at 9.30am with the route going through Castle Coole.

After completing the Saturday morning activity session participants will be given a voucher for a free swim or fitness room session during the week at the Fermanagh Lakeland Forum.

The ‘Couch Potato to Runner Bean’ physical activity programme will be delivered by qualified staff who will provide personal advice and support throughout the programme.

At the end of the ten week programme participants will have the opportunity to achieve a personal goal by walking, jogging or running the Enniskillen Parkrun 5k on Saturday 29 March 2014.

Vice-chairman of Fermanagh District Council, councillor Barry Doherty, said: “The first step is often the hardest and this programme is a great way to introduce people to physical activity with support from qualified staff throughout the ten weeks.”

To take part in the programme participants must be aged 18 years or over and not currently participating in physical activity.
