PERHAPS Fermanagh baby names have been influenced by the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Prince Charles or, worryingly, the bad boy actor Charlie Sheen.
But wherever the inspiration has stemmed from, Fermanagh parents have fallen for the name Charlie.
It topped the baby names list in 2013, overtaking Jack last year and Ryan in 2011. Traditonally a boys’ name, it has become the trend to call baby girls Charlie or however, it could be used as a nickname for Charlotte. The name Charlie stems from the old English ‘cerol’ meaning man.
And based on baby names within the whole of the North, it’s no longer a rhyme of Jack and Jill but more Jack and Grace going by the most popular names in 2013.
Jack continues to top the baby name list and has been for the last decade.
And saving Grace from third place last year, it now peaks the list as the most popular girl’s name. While Emily remained in second place, Sophie fell from first last year to third in 2013.
There have been 280 baby boys named Jack and 200 baby girls named Grace registered in 2013 so far.
James has held second position for the third year running, while Charlie was third in 2013 climbing from fifth in 2012.
Within the top twenty, Luke and Ella have significantly increased in popularity over the last year.
Four of the top 10 boys’ names from 2003 are still present in the top 10 today (Jack, James, Daniel and Matthew), but none of the girls’ names from the top 10 in 2003 remain in the top 10 today.
