MOVE…Could Fermanagh soon be playing in the Connacht Championship?

Fancy a trip out West to compete in the Connacht football championship?

Under proposals brought forward by a GAA think tank this could well become a reality for Fermanagh teams in the coming years.

The Football Review Committee (FRC) have issued their second document in just over a year and if their proposals were to go through it would see a radical shake up occur to the football championships.

The first document from the FRC saw the eventual adopting of the black card rule which will go live across the country next year.

Among a host of other proposals in this their second document the committee argue that the preliminary round losers in the Ulster Championship should be entered in the Connacht Championship.

While two of the losing preliminary round teams in Leinster enter the Muster Championship while the remaining loser join the Ulster team in Connacht.

The rational behind the move is to create four ‘provincial championships’ each with eight teams. The other change would be that the preliminary round teams would not be subject to an open draw but would be determined by league position.

So, the bottom two teams from Ulster according to league standings would be in the preliminary round.
In three of the last four years this would have placed Fermanagh in the preliminary round.
