THE FAMILY of a young man found dead on the banks of the River Erne in Enniskillen believe drugs were responsible for his death.
Thirty-two-year old electrician, Niall Smyth lived at Carnmore Lodge, Enniskillen. The father of one, he is immediately survived by his partner, Lisa, by his mother, Caroline (Peter) Moon, Trillick, by his sister, Deirdre, Enniskillen and by his grandparents, Dermot and Margaret Corrigan, Cornagrade Road.
His body was found last Friday on the banks of the River Erne at Loughview Drive, near to his home.
Meanwhile, another young man also died in tragic circumstances last Friday. Stewart Irwin (21) was the only child of Bryson and Evelyn Irwin, Tattyknuckle Road, Fivemiletown. His body was found at a house in the area.
Uncle of Niall Smyth, Francie Corrigan, described his nephew, who was a fluent Irish speaker, as ‘an absolute gem’. He told the Herald that he believed that his death was drugs-related.
“We are definitely satisfied that his death was not due to suicide. In fact, the post mortem confirms that he died from hypothermia.
“The family were fairly certain that Niall had been taking drugs and that, on this occasion, his body over-heated in reacting to the drugs he was taking, and he was cooling off on the river bank.”
Mr Corrigan explained that, due to the way his nephew had secreted himself, under a tree and behind rushes, family members and the PSNI took some time to locate him.
