FERMANAGH District council is to construct a recycling centre on the site of the now vacant Duke of Westminster School at Kesh.
The council already owns the school’s recreational grounds, but at this week’s monthly meeting, the decision was taken to purchase the remainder of the site on which the school buildings are located.
It is there that the recycling centre will be erected.
The council’s director of technical services, Gerry Knox explained that the council adopted a three-stage approach to acquiring the entire school site.
“We bought the recreational grounds on the Ederney-Kesh road in order to secure them for future use. It comprises football pitches, a tennis court and an all-weather pitch.
“The second part of the site we would intend using, subject to planning approval, to construct a new recycling centre, utilising a fairly modern building already on the site.
“That would leave a section in the centre available for business and enterprise use in the future.”
Mr Knox explained that the council would now be submitting proposals for the demolition of the school buildings.
As regards the purchase price, he explained that Land and Property Services would be advising the council in its dealings with the Western Education and Library Board.
