TRADITIONAL musician Mickey McConnell, originally from Belnaleck, has become something of an internet hit.
The former Fermanagh Herald journalist, who now lives in Kerry, was filmed singing a self-penned comedy tune looking at his comedic experiences shopping – while his wife was ill – in an Aldi and Lidl store.
Mickey’s most well-known song is possibly ‘Only our rivers run free’, but ‘The Ballad of Lidl and Aldi’ has taken on a life of its own, notching up over 130, 000 views on YouTube so far.
“The song is a true story,” Mickey said this week.
“My wife Maura sprained her ankle and I took over the shopping duties with disastrous results.”
As he said at the beginning of the video: “She was laid up at home, go out to Lidl or Aldi to buy a pound of sausages and I came home with a pound of sausages, and I came home with a cordless drill, and a wetsuit…”
The video was filmed at John B Keane’s bar in Listowel, Kerry.
“Of course I’m delighted that the song has caught on to the degree it has,” Mickey continued.
“In truth, I’m somewhat amazed at the reaction.
“I think that it is a reflection on the depressed state of the country that something that makes people laugh gets such a reaction.”
Officially retired, Mickey is working as a full-time musician and can be seen around Munster, and still keeps his hand in journalism.
