ON THE stroke of 2pm on Saturday close to one thousand brave souls began running, jogging and walking from the Lakeland Forum in Enniskillen as part of the annual Enniskillen 10K and leisure walk.
As the starting hooter went the runners and walkers left the Forum car park pounded along the Wellington Road heading in the direction of Castle Coole.
After a circuit of the historic National Trust property the route took the participants around Killyhevlin Industrial estate, up Ardhowen Hill (Enniskillen’s Beecher’s Brook) towards Derrychara playing fields and over the bridge to the finish line – where all participants got a bottle of water and a very well deserved medal.
Some were running for charities, including a number for ‘Together for Sam’, while others were just running for themselves, and for the good of their health.
Conditions for the race were almost perfect as the earlier rain had dried up and it was warm, but not sunny.
The event kicked off with free children’s entertainment at 11am, followed by a kiddie fun run and toddler trot at 12pm.
The event was started by chairman of Fermanagh District Council, councillor Alex Baird, who said:
“It is wonderful to see almost 1000 people of all ages and abilities taking part in the annual event and some participants raising money for worthy causes.
“I am delighted that this year’s event has been such a great success and I believe plans are already underway for the 2014 event.”
The annual event is run on partnership between Fermanagh District Council and Enniskillen Rotary Club.
