During the last 18 years since its inception, the Lakeland Community Care charity, has delivered quality care throughout south west Fermanagh including Belcoo, Garrison, Derrygonnelly, Newtownbutler and Teemore. It has worked in conjunction with the Western Health and Social Care Trust, CAWT and funders such as OFMDFM.

The Building for the Future project will create a central hub for LCC to provide an accessible, high quality health and well-being service to rural communities in the Erne West region.

The facility will link domiciliary and day care with healthy living and social engagement programmes within one building. It will take the form of a healthy living centre with day care facilities and additional accommodation such as activity areas, treatment rooms, shower and laundry facilities, a training room, drop into IT, a reminscence centre and a community garden.

Funding for the project was secured through South West Action for Rural Development (SWARD), and is part funded by NI Rural Development Programme and the Department for Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD).

At the launch, the symbolic first sod was turned and speeches were made by Margaret Gallagher the Chairperson of the LCC Board of Directors and David Small from DARD on behalf of Minister Michelle O’Neill. Also present from DARD was Cllr Alex Baird, Vice Chair of SWARD.

Margaret Gallagher hailed the event as a “mammoth step towards progress for Lakeland Community Care” and paid tribute to the local community who she said, “have supported the project every step of the way.”

David Small praised the work of LCC as an “excellent example of a social economy model which is providing key services at local level to improve the welfare of those living in rural areas.”
