On this day five years ago, a new dawn for healthcare provision broke as the South West Acute Hospital opened its doors.
After a three year build, on June 21st 2012, staff faced the huge task of moving an entire hospital from the old Erne site – patients and all – to the new £276 million facility.
Since then approximately 6,017 babies have been delivered along with 19,999 day cases and 148,766 Emergency Department attendances.
Professor Ronan O’Hare, Assistant Director of Acute Services was the Lead Clinican in charge of the move five years ago. He said today that SWAH has “delivered on a promise to bring vital care and treatment to thousands of patients in Tyrone and Fermanagh” and “is clearly offering a highly valuable service to the local community and further afield”.
