Canon Murphy was the oldest and longest serving priest of the diocese of Clogher and remained in active ministry almost to the very end of his long life.

A statement from the Clogher Diocesan office outlined Canon Murphy’s working life.

“A native of Killanny Parish [Co Louth] he served as a priest in Scotland for a few years before becoming curate in Enniskillen in 1950. He became Parish Priest of Eskra, Co. Tyrone in 1973, and in 1983 was appointed Parish Priest of Galloon Parish (Newtownbutler), Co. Fermanagh. He remained there as parish priest and Pastor Emeritus until his death. Canon Murphy was highly regarded as a kind and gentle pastor. He was also an accomplished musician whose work with Church Choirs is remembered with admiration and affection.”

The principal of St Mary’s Primary School, Newtownbutler Paula Kelly paid tribute to Canon Murphy, the school chaplain.
“The pupils and staff of St Mary’s Primary School were saddened to hear the news of their chaplain, Canon Murphy’s passing. He was a model and an inspiration to the pupils. The Canon knew every child in the school by name. It was clear from their bright and cheery interactions that he and the children shared mutual respect and affection.

“Without fail those with whom he came into contact, young and old, were uplifted by his gentle and positive influence. He will be sorely missed and remembered fondly.”

The funeral Mass for Canon Murphy was celebrated at St Mary’s Church, Newtownbutler on Tuesday at 3pm and was followed by burial at the adjoining cemetery.
